Safdie Rabines Architects AIA
Ricardo Rabines, a Peruvian-born architect, co-founded the San Diego-based firm Safdie Rabines Architects along with his wife, Taal Safdie. His multi-disciplined concentrations and expertise have shaped a portfolio that includes various project types, from academic, public and civic structures to single-family residences, mixed-use housing, bridges and infrastructure, and large urban master plans.
Expressing a conviction for architecture that is fully relatable to its environs, Ricardo’s work is guided by the betterment of the public realm and optimum user experience, realized through the subtle integration of structure and the activation of interiors as natural extensions of their settings. These philosophies have produced such noteworthy projects as the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook in Los Angeles, the Robert Paine Scripps “Seaside” Forum in San Diego, Eleanor Roosevelt College at University of California San Diego (UCSD) and the National City Aquatic Center.
Taal Safdie is a Founding Partner of Safdie Rabines Architects, an award-winning full-service architecture, interiors, and urban design firm accomplished in all facets of programming, design, and construction.
Taal established Safdie Rabines Architects with her husband and partner Ricardo Rabines in 1993. Starting with an emphasis on custom single-family homes, the firm’s work has grown to encompass civic, commercial, institutional, and infrastructure projects. Their expansive portfolio of residential typologies has evolved to include, affordable housing, student housing, mixed-use communities, and large-scale master plans.
Some of the firm’s notable projects include the Scripps Institute of Oceanography’s “Seaside Forum” oceanfront conference center at the gateway to the lower UC San Diego campus; the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook with commanding views over downtown Los Angeles; UC San Diego’s North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood, a fully-integrated, 7-structure community for student life and academic learning; the UCLA Court of Sciences Student Center at the heart of its Science Quad; and the Imperial Criminal Courthouse in El Centro, CA. The firm continues to expand across the U.S., including the mixed-use Crystal Flats development for the Walton Family Foundation in Bentonville, Arkansas; Evora, a live-work community in Southwestern Las Vegas; and a wide range of infrastructure projects both at home and abroad.
Mission Hills
This custom house is designed to maximize the views of the San Diego Bay while responding to the steep canyon on which it is located. This goal was accomplished through the incorporation of a 35’ long light-filled atrium that acts as both a horizontal and vertical axis that connects all three levels of the house and engages the entry with the gardens below. A two-story family room nestled into the hillside opens out to terraced gardens while the living room, dining, and kitchen are situated above for maximum views.

ABOUT THE AREA
WHAT TO DO
EATING OUT
Mission Hills
It is located on hills just south of the San Diego River valley and north of downtown San Diego and San Diego International Airport, overlooking Old Town, Downtown San Diego, and San Diego Bay.
The area is primarily residential, with boutique shops and restaurants along Washington Street, in the West Lewis Shopping District, and in other clusters. The oldest parts of the neighborhood were subdivided according to George Marston's 1908 plan,[1] and still consist mainly of houses from the 1908–1930 period, in vernacular, Craftsman, Prairie School, Spanish Colonial Revival and other styles.
